George Wayne was born to Elder George William, and Lady Willie Evelyn Pope in Ft. Worth, TX on April 16, 1942. He was a graduate of Dunbar High School Ft Worth (Stop Six) where he played the saxophone in the marching band. Upon completion of his High School Academia, George secured employment with the United States Postal Service for 16 years in Ft. Worth.
At the age of 16 George decided that he wanted to learn to play another musical instrument to accompany the church services at Stop Six Church Of God In Christ where he attended with his parents, so he taught himself to play the guitar, he mastered the skill and along with 3 friends started the Quartet Group The Dixie Tones, they were well received and invited to numerous churches and events. George, with his soulful singing skills was invited to many church concerts to bring enjoyment to all who attended.
At the age of 18 George fully committed his life to Christ and worked out his soul salvation, he accepted the calling of ministry and was ordained an elder in the Church Of God In Christ in 1978 under the leadership of Bishop J.E. Alexander and his Pastor Supt. W. Weatherspoon.
George married Judy Weatherspoon on February 25, 1971. The Pope family moved to Midland, TX in 1980, where he transferred his Postal Service employment for an additional 18 years. Being a husband and father was one of his greatest joys, he loved and cherished his family and provided for them. George and Judy endeavored to always pay it forward, that they opened their home and became foster parents for over 20 years
Elder Pope's ministry thrived as a Pastor. He was afforded the opportunity to spiritually support numerous congregations, Pastor of COGIC #I Colorado City, Assistant Pastor of Power House COGIC Big Spring, TX. Pastor of Alexander Chapel COGIC Lubbock, TX where he was instrumental in the Mortgage Burning, they were debt free he and his family returned to Midland.
The Pope family became members of Wayside COGIC under the pastorage of 1st Administrative Assistant Kenneth Weatherspoon, where Elder Pope was an Associate Pastor, Church Anniversary Coordinator, and the Sunday School Superintendent until his transition from earth to glory.
Elder Pope was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Ingrid Amelia, his son Howard Wayne, and son in law Leba Love.
His legacy will live on with his loving wife Judy Weatherspoon Pope, daughters: Karen Pope, Kanashia Pope Love, and Erica Pope, sons R. Andre (Natasha) Pope, and Michael Pope, grandsons: Dijanae, Calvin, Joshua. Elijah, and Jayce, granddaughters: Marissa, Chyna, Paris, and Emyah, Great Grands: Isabella and Cory. Brothers Gary (Neorma) Pope, and Pastor Alvin (Paula) Pope, a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
