Davelyn Griffith

June 7, 1958 — July 20, 2023

Most days, you could find her watching old westerns or painting in the back room, but today Davelyn Bryant Griffith is in Heaven experiencing more beauty than any of us can fathom. Davelyn Griffith went home to be with our Lord and Savior on July 20, 2023. Her death was unexpected, and our hearts are heavy. She was 65 when she passed away peacefully and surrounded by family.

Davelyn Griffith was born in Queen City, Texas to Marjorie and David Bryant. She has two younger siblings, Karen Burt of Texarkana, TX and Tommy Bryant of Oklahoma City, OK. After graduating from Atlanta High School in 1976, she went on to study psychology at Texas A&M Commerce (formerly known as East Texas State University) where she ultimately received a Bachelors in the same and obtained a Kindergarten through 8th grade teaching license. Following graduation, she went on to have a successful career as a teacher, teaching numerous grade levels and subjects. She enjoyed teaching English/Language Arts and would celebrate her students' successes. She championed her students in every aspect of life, not just simply education.

Davelyn met Craig E. Griffith in 1979 at a church youth camp one summer where she was a sponsor for her church's youth group. Her youth group volunteered her to play the organ and Craig was the worship leader for the camp. They were married on August 1, 1981 and had two children. Whitney was born in 1984 and Andrea was born in 1989. During their marriage, Davelyn followed where Craig was called. That led to her playing the organ (even if sometimes begrudgingly) in almost every church he served. They served side by side more years than any of us can count.

Since her retirement in 2014, Davelyn has spent her time assisting her husband with his fundraising business, traveling with him, and growing in her artistry. She enjoyed quiet mornings drinking her instant coffee and reading a good book. She was never without a good Sudoku puzzle to solve.

Davelyn is survived by her husband, Craig Griffith, her two children, Whitney Wright (husband Randy Wright) and Andrea Griffith. She is also survived by her sister, Karen Burt (husband Richard Burt), her brother, Tommy Bryant (wife Andrea Bryant, daughters Katy and Jay, and son Thomas). Davelyn was predeceased by her mother and father, Marjorie and David Bryant. She is forever remembered by Gordon Griffith (wife Kristy, daughter Brittany, and son Ryan) and Marvella McElya (husband Martin, daughter Alyssa, and sons Addison and Alexander).

A viewing will be held at Mayberry Funeral Home in Midland, Texas on Monday, July 24,2023 from 2-6pm with a visitation following from 6-8pm. A celebration of life service will be held at First Methodist Church in Midland, Texas at 1pm on Tuesday, July 25,2023.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation in Davelyn's name to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or your church's children's ministry; however, any gift or sentiment is treasured and received with the utmost love for the sender.
